School Site — Asbestos in Soil Investigation

School siteInvestigation works: Completed
Excavated trial pit in a hard-surfaced area surrounded by blue safety barriers, with orange barriers and a brick building behind

Project Overview

Clearscan Environmental completed an asbestos-in-soil investigation at a school site to support the planning of proposed groundworks. The works included trial pits, representative soil sampling, targeted sampling of suspect asbestos material, laboratory analysis, Waste Acceptance Criteria (WAC) testing and waste classification in line with the Environment Agency’s WM3 guidance.

Scope of Works

  • Trial pits were excavated to investigate the ground
  • Representative soil sampling was undertaken
  • Suspect asbestos material was targeted for sampling
  • Samples were submitted for laboratory analysis
  • WAC testing was carried out
  • Waste classification was completed in line with WM3

Waste Classification and WAC Testing

  • Waste classification in line with WM3 establishes whether excavated soils are hazardous or non-hazardous.
  • WAC testing is a separate assessment of whether the soils are suitable for acceptance at a particular landfill. It does not establish their waste classification.
  • Together, this information supported the planning of the proposed groundworks.
